Melnik area is one of the wine regions in Bulgaria. Traditions in cultivating vines here are very old. The beginning was in the middle Ages and with the developing of the town in XVII-XVIII c. they became stronger. Even now, in the old Melnik’s houses cellars could be seen, hewn in the rocks. Mild climate and the great number of sunny days in the year contribute for vine growing.
Melnik wine is made of an Old Bulgarian sort of vine- wide-leaf Melnik vine. It is distinguished with its taste, deep red colour and splendid aroma. The fame of Melnik wine spreads all over the world. An interesting fact is that every year Winston Churchill bought about 500 l of this wine.
