There is a legend about mavrud sort of grapes. According to it the origin of the vine dates of IX c. At that time, during the rule of Bulgarian khan Krum, there was a prohibition for cultivating vines and drinking wine. But a young man didn’t keep the prohibition and he was growing a vine in secret. He became very strong and brave from the wine he was drinking. One day, a lion ran off the Khan’s palace and the young man capture it and brang it back in the Palace. After that, Bulgarian khan was convinced in wine’s qualities and the prohibition was cancelled. And the wine was called Mavrud-by the name of the brave young man.
